This study reconstructs the lives of children who lived in St Michael's workhouse, St Albans, in the early nineteenth century, using sparse parish records and workhouse inventories from 1816–1829. It examines why children entered the workhouse, daily life inside, and what became of them in adulthood, with detailed case studies of Francis Grange, Ann Hedges, and Kezia Hawes.
